Making Movies

Director's Chair

Sometimes it can be great fun to watch a movie or filmclip on the page of a website.

The BBC's iPlayer has been a runaway success - with over a million people watching clips on the BBC website every day.

The BBC website has many, many pages with news reports plus a little clickable clip of footage for the visitor to watch - it could be anything from an interview with the Prime Minister to an annual cheese rolling event.

But you don't need the resources of the BBC to include movies on your website.

Is YouTube the answer?

YouTube is packed with thousands of bits of film, all of which have been uploaded by YouTube members. To include YouTube movies on your web page, you simply copy that little bit of code in the YouTube page's 'embed' box (it's available for most of the movies on there) and paste it in your own page's code.

When you do this, a link is created to the source movie and it magically appears on your web page.

Here, watch this - I've just pasted in some code and if you click on Ringo's face you should see the Beatles start playing.

The Player
The BBC's iPlayer is often found on BBC News pages. It appears as a little movie to accompany the story. If a picture is worth a thousand words - how much more can a movie reveal?

Did it work OK for you? I hope so!

So one way to do it is to make your movie, upload it to YouTube in the usual way then make it appear on your website with that little bit of embed code. OK, so you have to have the YouTube logo and links in there, but if that is not an issue for you, it is a small price to pay for the convenience.

If you're less technically minded and want someone to do all this for you, maybe you should give us a call... We Can Work it Out!
